The Maijishan Grottoes, featuring 194 caves cut in the side of the hill of Majishan in Tianshui City, Gansu Province, contain over 7,200 Buddhist sculptures and over 1,000 square meters of murals. The construction began in the Later Qin era (384–417) while the latest ones were built during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Known as the "Oriental Sculpture Museum" for their numerous grottoes, perfect statues and long history, the Maiji Grottoes is listed as one of the four most important grottoes in China, together with the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, Yungang Caves in Shanxi Province, and the Longmen Grottoes in Henan Province.
