Lanzhou, renowned as a city of science and education in northwestern China, incorporates numerous scientific research institutions and has nurtured many specialists and technicians.

Its comprehensive scientific and technological power is much stronger than that of most large- and medium-sized cities in China. Scientific research fields in Lanzhou, including the light industry, instrument manufacturing, medical science, agriculture, petrochemical industry, metallurgy, mechanics, materials science, geology and energy, hold an extraordinary competitive edge. Many globally renowned high-tech institutions, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences Lanzhou Branch, Institute of Modern Physics of CAS and Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products, are all located in the city. China’s first heavy ion accelerator and intense neutron generator were all produced there.

In addition, Lanzhou University, established in 1909, is a major research university under the jurisdiction of China's Ministry of Education and has made great achievements in the fields of organic chemistry, cell biology, theoretical physics, nuclear physics and ecology. The university is highly praised for its numerous and high-quality academic publications in international journals. In addition, the Northwest Normal University, Northwest Nationalities University, Lanzhou University of Technology and Lanzhou Jiaotong University have also become competitive and nationally renowned over the past few years.
