Lanzhou Taiping Drum [File Photo]

Dubbed “the finest drum under heaven,” the Lanzhou Taiping Drum has a history of several hundred years.

Shaped like a cylinder, its origin can be traced back to the fight for the victory of state power during the turn of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.

According to folklore tales, Xu Da, a general during the reign of Zhu Yuanzhang (1328-1398) in the Ming Dynasty, won a battle in the westward fight and crafted drums in the shape of water buckets to celebrate the victory and pray for eternal peace. Taiping literally means “peace” in Chinese.
