The Statue of Duan Xu [File Photo]

Duan Xu, an official and a scholar of Neo-Confucianism in the Ming Dynasty, invented the Lanzhou Waterwheel.

During his tenure of office in the southern part of China, Duan took a great interes in waterwheel technology. After he had retired to his hometown Lanzhou, he concentrated on designing the Lanzhou Waterwheel, which later exerted great influence on the overall agriculture along the Yellow River. Lanzhou is therefore dubbed "the city of the waterwheel."

Today, there is a statue of the inventor of the Lanzhou Waterwheel Duan Xu at the Lanzhou Waterwheel Garden on the southern banks of the Yellow River in Lanzhou.
