Lanzhou is the biggest industrial city in the upstream of the Yellow River. Lanzhou was also one of the key construction cities during the first national Five-Year Plan period, the second Five-Year Plan period and the Third Line Movement.

To date, a relatively complete industrial system has been established, covering fields such as petrochemical engineering, nonferrous metallurgy, mechatronics, medicine and building mterial.

Lanzhou has developed into China’s most important base for raw materials and the heavy chemical industry. Considerable large- and medium-size enterprises, such as PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, Lanzhou Aluminum Plant, the Yellow River Group and Keats Group, all play an indispensable role in China’s industrial development.

Currently, Lanzhou has a High and New Technology Industry Development Zone and an Economic and Technological Development Zone, both at the state-level. The two zones have successfully developed several high and new technology productions with independent property rights, such as the high-pressure radical plunger pump, the hammer apparatus and memory alloy. These two development zones have already become the ideal destinations for foreign investment.
