Being a distinctive folk craft in China, the Lanzhou cucurbit carving has a history of more than 100 years and was once a kind of popular exported products in the 1950s and 60s. A total of 40 varieties of cucurbit can be used for carving with the longest being 1.7 meters long. Dexterous artisans use gravers and painting brushes to engrave paintings on the surface of a cucurbit. It is reported that there are only about 20 cucurbit engravers in Lanzhou and the handicraft deserves inheritance with urgency. Zhao Huarong, being one of them, has made a lot of efforts to hand down the skill with perseverance. “The process needs more practice, thoughts and reference,” he said. [Photo/gansu.gscn.com.cn]
