Gansu launched a new cargo route on Oct 23, running from its capital city of Lanzhou to Islamabad, Pakistan. This is the second cargo route linking from the northwestern province of China to South Asia.

Marking the launch of the route, a freight train set out from the Dongchuan railway logistics center at the International Land Port of Gansu (Lanzhou) for a 13-day trip to Islamabad, which is nearly 15 days shorter than the previous trip via Tianjin Port or Qingdao Port on the east coast of China.

The multimodal cargo service will shift to from railway to road transportation in Kashgar, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, and then exit China at Khunjerab Pass before reaching its final destination in Pakistan.

The entire trip will cover 4,500 kilometers, 3,300 by railway and 1,200 by road.  

A total of 450 metric tonnes of cargo, worth a combined $1.5 million, will be transported through the maiden ride, including mechanical equipment, auto parts, and daily necessities.
